When it comes to breast implant options, women want to pick the implant that comes with the lowest possible risk to their overall health. Milwaukee-based IDEAL IMPLANT® Premier Surgeon Dr. Paul Loewenstein has over 34 years of experience in the plastic surgery industry. He says many women may not know the risks that are associated with silicone implants.
“In the early 1990s the FDA put a moratorium on the use of silicone gel implants for breast enhancement. This was based on some claims patients made (mostly in the state of Texas) that the silicone gel implants were causing them to have diseases such a rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, lupus, or what we call connective tissue diseases.
“After thorough research was completed using large populations of women and extensive analysis, those studies showed there was no statistical association between silicone gel-filled implants and those diseases. So the silicone gel implant came back on the market, and the companies have improved those implants over the years. The current generation has a little bit thicker shell, a more cohesive gel, but they still haven’t been able to get around the fact that the body builds a shell around the implant. If there’s a break in the silicone shell it’s going to be contained by the bodies’ scar tissue layer, so women don’t know if they have a leaking silicone implant. They have to get an MRI to detect a leak.” – Dr. Paul Loewenstein
Discussing Breast Implant Options with Your Surgeon
At an initial breast augmentation consultation, women are presented with their breast implant options. They can choose between silicone gel, saline, and structured saline implants. Some may choose silicone gel implants for their more natural look, not knowing that the FDA recommends undergoing an MRI three years after receiving these implants and every two years after that. These MRIs are the only way for women to learn if their silicone implants are intact or ruptured, and they are not always 100% reliable. Often these MRIs are not covered by insurance and can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars out of pocket.
So why pick an implant that makes it practically impossible to detect a rupture and costs additional money to do so? Now you don’t have to. Innovative breast implant technology is available with IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implants. These implants come with zero risk of silent rupture and both women and men agree they look and feel natural.
Compare Potential Complications Between Your Options
If you have a rupture in your IDEAL IMPLANT, you can check yourself out in a mirror and see it for yourself. There’s no need for an expensive MRI. The IDEAL IMPLANT is a structured implant with only saline inside, so if it does leak, the saline solution will be harmlessly absorbed by the body. Unlike silicone gel implants, you won’t need a lengthy surgery to remove sticky silicone gel touching your body tissue. Your plastic surgeon can quickly and easily replace your IDEAL IMPLANT with a small incision to remove the empty implant shell.
Women who have picked saline implants in the past complain about the “rippling” or “wrinkling” effect these implants have under clothing, giving them an unnatural look and feel at times. But women can achieve a full and round shape with the IDEAL IMPLANT, due to its internal structure that keeps the saline in place, while still feeling natural. The IDEAL IMPLANT also has a lower risk of rupture and capsular contracture compared to other breast implant options.
“Capsular contracture (or the buildup of scar tissue around an implant) has bothered us plastic surgeons over the years, because no one has been able to figure out a true solution to it.” – Dr. Paul Loewenstein
Capsular contracture can squeeze or displace the breast implant, which is often painful for many women. At 6 to 7 years, silicone implants can have capsular contracture rates as high as 16.2% for primary augmentation, compared to only 6.3% with IDEAL IMPLANT. Dr. Loewenstein sees this as a great advantage.
“So far I haven’t seen capsular contracture as a major problem [with the IDEAL IMPLANT]. Now that may change 15 years from now, but for now, the incidents of capsular contracture are extremely low. It’s lowest among all the different types of implants available. I just find that there’s a lot of reasons to have peace of mind when using the IDEAL IMPLANT.” -Dr. Paul Loewenstein
